Lombardy’s wine-producing area of Franciacorta is a delight for gourmets. Halfway between Brescia and Lake Iseo, this region – which is virtually unknown to tourists – features the Franciacorta Wine Route that stretches for 80km amidst rolling hills scattered with ancient churches and hamlets.
The name, meaning "short taxes", is a reminder of the region's medieval past, when Benedictine monks were exempted from paying taxes in return for agricultural duties.
The day will start with a visit of one of the largest wineries in the area, where cellar masters will conduct a private tour of the estate. You will have the opportunity to visit the fermentation rooms and the barrel cellars and learn how Franciacorta is produced.
A Franciacorta tasting session will follow. Lunch will take us to the nearby restaurant, where you will be served a traditional Italian lunch with Franciacorta wine.
After lunch, visitors will have a little free time to walk through the estate and visit the permanent exhibition of handicraft tools and instruments.
BERGAMO
A thirty-minute drive will take us to Bergamo, a medieval city split into an upper and a lower part. Bergamo Alta is worth a stop, but can only be reached by a steep cable car or “funicolare”.
Enjoy an enchanting stroll down the medieval streets, relax in a cool wine bar and take the time for a little shopping in the chic boutiques.
