Padua, the town of St. Anthony, is visited by millions of visitors who come to pay homage to the Saint each year. However, there is more to Padua than the Basilica and to give just a few examples, visitors can also admire the Scrovegni Chapel, with Giotto’s frescoes; Palazzo della Regione, also known as the Salon because of the size and the elegance of its interiors; and Casa degli Ezzelini, built in the 13th century, which has maintained its mullioned and three-mullioned windows.
The Basilica of St. Anthony, which is now an International Sanctuary, is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world. In addition to the Tomb of Saint Anthony, the Main Altar is also worth a stop, as is the Chapel of Relics, the Cloisters and the Saint’s Chapel. The Basilica as we see it today is largely the result of three different reconstructions, which took place over a period of about 70 years, from 1238-1310.
COLLI EUGANEI
The Euganei Hills are a group of hills that erupted spontaneously from the surrounding Venetian flatlands thirty million years ago. Wine and olive oil have been produced in this area since ancient times, as the climate and the particular nature of the soil lend themselves to yielding flavoursome grapes and olives.
Having followed our wine route through prehistoric lava mounds, hamlets, monasteries and castles, we will visit a well-known wine cellar, one of the first pioneers of the area to grow vineyards on the Euganei hills.
Here we will stop for a wine tasting with 3 different wines accompanied by a selection of cheese and ham.
